Waterra Surge Blocks for Well Development

Waterra Surge Blocks for Well Development and Clean Out

Waterra Surge Blocks are excellent low cost tools for Developing, Surging and Cleaning out Groundwater Monitoring Wells.

Designed to work with the Waterra Pump System, Surge Blocks are tough thermoplastic donuts that press fit onto either a Standard Flow D-25 Foot Valve or a High Flow D-32 Foot Valve. There are 2 choices for both Standard Flow and High Flow systems to accommodate either 2 inch or 4 inch wells.

Please note that Surge Blocks, Foot Valves and Tubing are sold separately

Surge and Pump – Uniquely Effective!

The Waterra Well Development System is one of the most effective methods for developing monitoring wells because it simultaneously surges and pumps the well. This system can also be utilized to remove silt and sediment that has accumulated in the foot of the monitoring well.

In detail, the Surge Block – Footvalve combo is matched to fit just inside the well diameter leaving a 1/16 inch annular gap so that water doesn’t flow easily around the combo. As the combo is reciprocated up and down in the well, water is both forced into the formation and sucked out of the formation. This breaks down bridging and mobilizes the fines in the formation which are pumped up through the Footvalve and removed from the well.

Recommended Method Of Use

The recommended method for developing a monitoring well with the Waterra Pump System and Surge Block is to begin the development process with the surge block near the top of the well screen. Operate the pump with the Surge Block – Footvalve combo in this position until the turbidity level of the water being delivered from the pump decreases to an acceptable level. Once this level is reached then the combo is lowered in the well screen one to two feet and the process is repeated.

Developing wells in this manner is one of the best methods, often resulting in turbidity levels below 10 NTUs.

Waterra Words of Wisdom

  • Most 2 inch wells (unless they are very deep) are developed or cleaned out with the Standard Flow System
  • Most 4 inch wells (unless they are very shallow) are developed or cleaned out with the High Flow System
  • Due to the forces required you will certainly appreciate a Hydrolift or a Power Pack to do the Well Development or Clean-out.
