Waterra Words of Wisdom
Waterra WS-2 Water Level Sensors Features
- auto shut-off
- sensitivity adjustment
- rugged modular construction
- powered by 4 AA batteries
- membrane ON/OFF switch
- extremely low power consumption
- sensor’s probe is 5/8″ diameter and is constructed from 316 stainless steel. The probe is snapped into the side of the reel in a probe holder when not in use.
- dog bone polyethylene tape cross-section design prevents adherence to wet surfaces such as well casings
- metric tapes are graduated to the nearest millimetre
- imperial tapes are graduated to the nearest 1/100 of a foot
Two graduated well tape options: Polyethylene or Kynar
Waterra Water Level Sensors come with two graduated tape coating options: Polyethylene or Kynar. Polyethylene coating are less expensive, service mot applications and are the most widely used. Kynar coatings are used in specialty applications and advantages as laid out below.
KYNAR Coated Tape Features
- extremely non-reactive with many different substances
- extremely pure, strong, and able to resist heat, bases, acids, and solvents
- very resistant to ultraviolet rays
- Kynar is a fluorocarbon (PVDF) so if PFOA or PFAS are concerns at your site, you may want to use a polyethylene tape instead

The WS-2 line of Water Level Sensors use tough, plastic reels to protect the stainless steel tape from damage and dirt while the tape is stored on the reel. They are made from black polyethylene and their lightweight and slim profile make them very portable.
The WS-2 Open Reel is available with tapes in metric units of 30, 50, 75, 100, 200, 300 or 500 meters or 100 or 250 feet.

The WS-2 Closed Reel is only available with either a 30 meter or a 100 foot tape.

Waterra’s new WS-2 Reel Case is a high quality meter and a rugged, hardcase combined into single unit. The Reel Case incorporates a pop-out Tape-Track™, reel brake, probe holder and folding support leg into the removable lid of a high quality hardcase. Perfect for storage, transportation and operation — your meter will now have the best protection possible.
The WS-2 Reel Case is available with a 100 foot, 30 and 50 meter tape only.

When the WS-2 is turned on, the battery light will be illuminated continuously. Low batteries are indicated by a flashing signal from the low battery light indicator.
When the WS-2 water level probe contacts water, the buzzer will emit an intermittent tone and the water indication light will illuminate.
In some groundwater conditions, the probe may not adequately detect the water in the well. This may be caused by low salinity. When this happens, the sensitivity of the unit can be adjusted by rotating the sensitivity adjustment knob located on the left side of the front hub panel.
WS-2 Faceplate Features
- membrane ON/OFF switchwith an automatic power saving feature that will turn the unit off after three minutes
- water indication light LED display that illuminates when water is detected
- loudest buzzer available was chosen for these sensors to ensure that the units could be heard in noisy environments.
- sensitivity adjustment potentiometer allows the unit to be set specifically to a wide range of water salinities, allowing the user to dial out the false readings caused by cascading water
- low battery indication light
- battery pack is located on underside of faceplate
Adjusting The Conductivity Sensitivity Setting
In order to allow the WS-2 Reel Case to detect water of various salinity, the design includes a sensitivity adjustment knob. This knob is located on the left side of the front hub panel.
In monitoring wells where excessive bridging is experienced, the knob should be rotated to the left. Where water of low salinity is suspected, the knob should be rotated to the right. The optimum setting is obtained by adjusting the control knob to the point where the WS-2 is no longer emitting the water signal while the probe is immersed in the well. Then rotate the knob back in the opposite direction slowly, stopping when the water signal begins again.
