Waterra Groundwater Sampling Pump
Waterra Groundwater Sampling Pump for Monitoring Wells and Piezometers
The Waterra Groundwater Sampling Pump System (Inertial Pump) was developed in Canada in the 1980’s to meet demand for a reliable and inexpensive pump for purging and sampling groundwater monitoring wells.
The system is designed for everything from drive point size, 1/2 inch (1.2 cm) up to 2 inch (5 cm) and 4 inch (10 cm) wells or piezometers. It will also perform well in harsh environments that would ruin other more expensive pumps. Today, it has become one of the most prolific devices for purging, developing, sampling and VOC sampling monitoring wells.
Waterra Pumps are often dedicated to wells due to their low cost and to avoid cross-contamination or de-conning issues.

Waterra Tubing Actuator
The Waterra Groundwater Sampling Pump System is a simple, inexpensive way to sample a monitoring well.
- A Waterra Foot Valve is attached the bottom end of a length of Waterra Tubing.
- The Foot Valve – Tubing combo is inserted into the well, Foot Valve first, until the valve is submerged beneath the water table to the desired pumping depth.
- The tubing is then oscillated (pulled up and then pushed down) over a short vertical range of motion either by hand or with a Waterra Tubing Actuator.
- Water builds up in the oscillating tubing until it discharges at surface.

Waterra Words of Wisdom
The performance of each system of the Waterra Pump is largely controlled by its tubing diameter — the larger the tubing the greater the flow rate and depth capability. Within each system are an assortment of different foot valves and tubing for different sampling requirements. We can help you optimize the system.
1) By Hand – Unfortunately We Can't Provide These
The Waterra Pump Systems can actually be made to pump by hand IF the well is not too deep OR there is not too much water to pump. Simply grab the tubing with one or both hands and pull the tubing up with a bit of a snapping motion and lower it back down.
A one foot stroke should suffice but it is hard work and that is why we offer mechanical Waterra Tubing Actuators below.
2) Waterra Lever Arm - Manual Tubing Actuator
The Waterra Lever Arm -Tubing Actuator is a convenient, portable manual levered arm designed to provide mechanical advantage when using a Waterra Pump. It also facilitates the collection of samples.
This Tubing Actuator is the best choice for the occasional light duty say less than 100 feet (30 m) with the standard flow system. It can be used with Low Flow, Standard Flow and for shallow High Flow Waterra Pump Systems.
3) Hydrolift – Electrical Tubing Actuator
The Hydrolift Tubing Actuator is portable electrical equipment that will vertically oscillate the Waterra Foot Valve-Tubing Combo in your monitoring well. It will give a big efficiency boost to your field sampling program.
This Tubing Actuator is designed for purging, developing and sampling 2 inch (5 cm) diameter monitoring wells up to 200 feet (60 m) deep. In special circumstances, it can lift as much as 300 feet = 90 m. The Hydrolift is optimized to operate with the Standard Flow System up to its maximum effective depth and will operate with the High Flow System up to a depth of 150 feet (45m).
4) Power Pack – Gasoline Powered Tubing Actuator
The Waterra PowerPack Tubing Actuator provides gasoline driven vertical oscillation for Waterra Pumps to depths of 200 feet (60m).
The PowerPack is powerful enough to lift water from over 200 feet (60m) depth using the Standard Flow System, and it fits onto a back-pack frame. This Tubing Actuator incorporates clamps for Waterra Standard and High Flow tubing sizes (adaptors are available for smaller tubes).
